VISIT

The sharp scent of fall filled the air, along with the smell of burning leaves. The mornings were full of frost before the twin suns arose and burned it off. Bryn had slipped out of the Keep this morning, past the chickens and the sleepy cats in the alleyways. She stumbled, and a black cat crossed her path. She frowned, a bad omen, then shook her head. She didn’t believe in that superstition.

She neared the gate, and a guard stopped her. “Princess Bryn, where are you going? You can’t go out alone!”

“I just want to go for a walk,” she demanded, stomping her feet.

“Well, your father would have my hide if I let you leave by yourself,” the guard said, blocking her.

“Fine!” she said angrily and then spun on her heel. She knew another way. She should have just taken that way first.

She walked back through Vale and found the appa stables. The stables were still dark, and she patted Moxie and Brutus’s beaks on the way by. She climbed up into the loft, smelling the sweet smell of hay. When she was little, she used to play up here. In fact, she spied her old box of wooden blocks in the corner.

There was a large door in the hayloft, which opened to the outside to allow for the birds to fly in and out. Conveniently, there was a ladder that led to the ground and into the fields outside of the walls. Most people didn’t know it existed, as only the birds flew in and out. They only used the ladder when the hayloft was being filled in the fall, and the farmers just never removed it.

Huffing and puffing, she climbed down the ladder, making sure she had a dagger stuck in her boot. What she was doing was a little dangerous, but she was sure she could handle herself.

Looking left and right and seeing no guards on this side of the wall, she ran the distance to the fog. Stopping right at the edge, she pulled out her dagger, took a deep breath, and then slipped inside the swirling mist.

She only took two steps in and stopped. Listening intently, she strained her ears. She heard nothing, no sounds of monsters. “Mother,” she whispered, waiting. “Mother! It’s me. Bryn. Are you here, on the mountain?”

She thought she heard something moving. It sounded like footsteps. A coldness hit her and she strained to see into the mist. Her human eyes couldn’t see.

“If you are here, will you talk to me?” she pleaded, waiting in the stillness.

“My child. Bryn. Why do you seek me out?” A voice, full of sadness, spoke from right in front of her.

“I have magic. I always have. I don’t understand it. I want to know more about it, how it works, and what it can do. Please tell me,” Bryn pleaded.

“Oh, child. I’m sorry. I should have thought your father wouldn’t tell you who you are,” the voice said. Suddenly, a tall, black-haired woman appeared, just a foot from Bryn.
